Here is one more expense that you just don't need
during your trip. Have you ever traveled abroad, left the kids
at home, and then called from your hotel to check up on them?
I bet you were flabbergasted at the rates that hotels charge for international
long distance! Expensive hook-up fees, high per-minute rates,
or worse yet, no international long distance at all! Even if you
use your calling card provided by your local phone company, the rates
are probably astronomical. Cell phones won't work in Cancun without
arranging with the phone company before your trip, and even if you arrange
first, the rates are still very high.
We have the solution. There are many calling
cards that specialize in international long distance. Rates run
as low as 9 cents per minute from Cancun Mexico to the U.S.! That's
less than we pay to call across the river to Portland! Make sure
you take one with you just in case you need it. You don't want
to get stuck having to call home from the airport without a calling
card.
Listed below are some of the major international
calling cards for you to check out. Each of these companies has
many different cards so you can be sure to get the one that best suits
your calling style. Our personal preference is the
Global Caller from Zaptel, since it's the cheapest you can get without
using a computer, but you can choose the one that fits you.
* With PC to Phone calling, you can call very cheap
from any computer with a microphone to a telephone. However, you
must have a computer handy to call from. If you're bringing a
laptop to Cancun anyway, this is a great way to save some $$ if you're
calling home.
** With Web Connect, you actually talk on the phone,
not over the computer. It works from your cell phone, pay phone,
whatever. The trick is to make the connection over the internet
by filling out a connection form. Then, you pick up your regular
phone and presto! You're connected. You will still need a computer
handy though. It just won't need a microphone.
The rest of the cards do not require a computer.
