COSTA MAYA AND MAHAHUAL SCUBA DIVING

Costa Maya

Costa Maya is one of the best scuba diving destinations in all of Mexico, even the Caribbean.  The heart of diving in Costa Maya is the oceanside village of Mahahual, marked by its beachfront promenade.  Costa Maya is most often visited by cruise ships, but it is a well known scuba diving destination where divers congregate for the unspoiled coral reefs and plentiful marine life.

Costa Maya is fronted by the Mesoamerican Reef, the world's second largest barrier reef that runs from Cancun in the north to Honduras in the south.  The brilliant coral reefs are highlighted by over 65 different species of coral, 350 species of mollusks and 500 species of fish, most of which can be seen right here in Mahahual.  The Costa Maya section of the barrier reef is one of the best protected and preserved sections of the entire reef, with low impact diving.

The diving in Mahahual is very easy, suitable for all skill levels of divers.  The reef is highlighted by an inner reef, which is about 50-60 feet deep, then the more spectacular outer reef, which features drop-offs that seem infinite.  The current hear is typically mild and the waters are always warm.  Visiting divers often don't even bother with wetsuits here.  Further south is Xcalak, home to a protected marine preserve, where you can find exciting creatures like manatees.
