There are a lot of benefits to joining the United MileagePlus frequent flyer miles program. United Airlines is a member of the StarAlliance, the world's largest global airline alliance, which  gives you a wonderful opportunity to use your free flights to pretty much anywhere you can imagine. Trips to Cancun from the West Coast and East Coast alike are easy to come by. United flies to so many destinations, that it would seem crazy not to belong to Mileage Plus even if it's not your primary account.  Here are some of the ways to get miles:

Air Miles with Credit Cards

This is the single best way to really pack on the air miles.  Think - if you make $60,000 per year, you could have 60,000 air miles just from buying the things you buy normally.  If you make $100,000, you can have 100,000 miles.  That's four trips to Cancun in one year FOR FREE!  United has teamed with Chase for it's Credit Card offerings.  We use our air miles card for all our purchases - and we fly for free pretty much everywhere we want to go!  What a great deal! 

There are also a lot of other great ways to pick up air miles along the way with United.  As a member of the Star Alliance, they have a wide list of worldwide partners making international travel really easy.  If you are based in Europe, this is a great alliance to join, with Lufthansa and SAS in addition to United's massive European destination list.
