COBA RUINS
EXCURSIONS AND TOURS IN PLAYA
Coba is a mysterious and fascinating ruins site -
much different from the more famous Mayan ruins sites of Chichen
Itza and Tulum. These tours are different as well - more
focused on the Mayan culture and sustainable tourism than serving
the masses. Coba is set deep in the jungle, about 1 hour and 45 minutes
SW of Playa del Carmen. It's most famous feature is
the 136-foot Nohoch Mul.

Coba was once a great city in the Mayan Empire, being
served by the trading port of Tulum since about 600 A.D. However,
it's ruins were not discovered until the 19th century, and to this day,
much of the city remains uncovered. Coba is a large ruins site,
so they rent bicycles and even rickshaws (pedicabs) to take you around
the ruins, and offer fascinating guided tours of Coba.
If you're feeling up to it, climb up the great pyramid,
Nohoch Mul, and at 136 feet high, you'll feel like Indiana Jones as
you look out over the vast jungle expanses of the Riviera Maya.
The views are really incredible. We recommend the pedicabs if
you have limited mobility - it's a great way to explore the ruins for
seniors and others.
The ruins are open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM every
day.
